Clean water: The world’s smartest investment

Today, March 22nd is World Water Day, and this year’s theme is water and jobs. Half of the planet’s workers – a whopping 1.5 billion of us – are employed in water-related sectors. Clean water is the world’s smartest investment and World Water Day 2016 asks us to ask ourselves a crucial question:

How can we harness the power of water to transform our societies and economies?

Better water + better jobs = better lives

In honor of this vital reflection, we’d like to give a shout out to our partner charity: water (CW)* – a charity we reckon is as transparent and sustainable as, well… water. Funding water programs in 24 countries around the globe, CW focuses on providing people in remote rural communities in Africa, Asia, and South and Central America with access to clean water so they can live and work better.

Its clean, clear modus operandi creates a win-win for donors and communities: 100% of donations go straight to the field, through local partners at ground level. There’s no smoke and mirrors: donors can –and are encouraged to– monitor the progress of every project through photos and geo-localization tools.

CW advocates that access to clean water is the most powerful tool for sparking economic growth that humanity has ever known. Every $1 invested in clean water can yield $4–$12 in economic returns.

Go with the flow

The facts on the value of water speak for themselves. It takes 40,000 gallons of water to make one car (before you add the gas). Now, thanks to technological advances, brilliant minds and brave investors, we can affordably and conveniently conserve water from the comfort of our own homes.

Charity: water is also pioneering clean water innovation out in the field. As part of its Pipeline maintenance program, the charity is piloting the installation of remote sensors to monitor the use and flow of water within its various projects. This quality control procedure enables trained mechanics to detect and solve problems, and ensures that resources are used as effectively as possible.

Why Water? DonandMerit history in Ethiopia through Water is Life and DonandMerit

Why water?

In 2008 we made our first holiday/cooperation trip to Ethiopia together with Austin, Texas based non-profit A Glimmer of Hope. We fell instantly in love with this vast country and humble hard working people with such generous smiles and characters – a love and admiration that’s only grown stronger over the years and through our son, Dawit, who was born there.

Through A Glimmer of Hope we had the opportunity to visit a community in the north-east region of Tigray. We watched women and children drink filthy water from stagnant ponds and scoop it up to fill their dirty plastic bottles. Cows and goats walked around in that same water – a vital resource shared by all.
